Do-it-yourself Handkerchiefs. The most common fate of the worn-out t-shirt is a brief afterlife as a household rag. Oftentimes, however, this "afterlife" is only a stopover before the irrevocably soiled rag hits the trash. This abbreviated version of recycling is what environmental architect William McDonough calls "down-cycling;" meaning that the object is recycled only once before it is discarded. While McDonough has been working to develop truly recyclable substitutes for the things we discard or down-cycle today, it doesn't take a degree in materials science to functionally re-use your re-usables for longer.

Turning worn t-shirts into elegant handkercheifs creates an incentive for keeping the rags around. Old-school tricks like embroidery and embellishment confer value to abused cotton, and make it more likely that it will be appreciated in it's re-incarnated form as a handkerchief. As a side benefit, the hankies save Kleenex money and don't chap the nose. And the more elegant ones an be donated to Kent Rodcwicz, who will certainly know what to do with them.... Are handkerchiefs hygenic? Common wisdom holds that disposable paper tissues are more sanitary than cloth handkerchiefs. Assuming the paper tissues are disposed of immediately following use, and that the hands of the nose-blower are washed afterwards, this is probably true. People who are sick and may be infectious should stick with disposables, and wash their hands after sneezing/coughing.

For more common runny-nose afflictions (allergies, cold weather, etc.), a handkerchief is probably as good an option as disposable tissues. Keep the handkerchief folded, and use the inside for blowing. Wash handkerchiefs frequently. In the heyday of handkerchief use, many people carried two or three hankies with them, and used each for different purposes. Stay tuned for the "handkerchief carrier;" a cloth wallet designed specifically for keeping multiple handkerchiefs in order. (Design will debut on this site April 15th.)

A Declaration of Love/ by Kent Rodzwicz

"I am, at all times, prepared to lay out my handkerchief in the soiled path of a delicate damsel. As this has never happened, I have other excuses for carrying a handkerchief.
